Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date
The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
